MPs take oath of office following parliament elections

6 November 2018 - Following the recent Kurdistan Region parliamentary election, on 6 November MPs gathered to take their oath of office. The Kurdistan Region’s Independent High Election and Referendum Commission (IHERC) announced the final results of the vote last month, which have been approved by the Judicial Council.

The parliament Speaker and deputies have not yet been selected, as government formation talks between the political parties are ongoing. Reving Muhammad (KDP), parliament’s eldest member, led this first sitting of the new parliament and has been elected temporary Speaker until a permanent speaker is elected.

The unicameral legislature has 111 seats, with a 30 percent quota reserved for women, and 11 seats reserved for Turkmen, Christian and Armenian parties to ensure proper representation of minorities.
