Deputy Speaker Hawrami meets with Lord David Alton

Kurdistan Parliament Deputy Speaker Hemin Hawrami on 3 December welcomed Lord David Altun, cross-bench member of the UK Parliament’s House of Lords and a member of its International Relations and Defense Committee. 

Deputy Speaker Hawrami briefed them on the current situation in Kurdistan Region and Kurdistan’s safe haven for Iraq IDPs, Syrian refugees, and all of Iraq’s religious and ethnic components. He said that despite suffering a major economic crisis, Kurdistan Region has provided a safe place for those escaping war or threats of violence.

Mr. Hawrami also informed the delegation about the peaceful coexistence among all the ethnic and religious components of the Kurdistan Region, whose rights are protected by laws passed by the Kurdistan Parliament.  

Lord Alton and his accompanying delegation said that the purpose of their visit was to learn about the current situation for Christians, and they commended the peaceful coexistence that they saw among the various communities in Kurdistan.

They also discussed their attempts to help gain recognition of the chemical bombardment of Halabja and the crimes committed against the Yazidis as acts of genocide.
