Deputy Speaker Hawrami welcomes US and UK church charities

The Kurdistan Parliament Deputy Speaker Hemin Hawrami on 8 December welcomed representatives of church charities from United States and United Kingdom, headed by Marca Sciarelli. MPs from Parliament’s Endowments and Religious Affairs Committee joined the meeting.

Deputy Speaker Hawrami briefed the charity representatives on the practical and psychological support for Iraqi IDPs and Syrian refugees who have fled to Kurdistan Region since the start of the war against ISIS.

Mr. Hawrami said that Kurdistan is for people of all ethnicities and religions, and their rights are protected under Kurdistan Parliament’s Law No. 5 of 2015. Christians have an active role in the Kurdistan Regional Government and other institutions, and the rights of Kurdistan’s ethnic and religious components will be defined in the future Kurdistan Constitution.

The delegation thanked Hawrami for his briefing, and commended the peaceful co-existence of diverse communities in the Kurdistan Region. They promised to continue their financial, practical and psychological support to refugees and IDPs in Kurdistan Region.
