Parliament's Presidency conveys best wishes on Kurdistan Flag Day and Mother's Day

The Kurdish people, like any other nation, have hundreds of stories and moments in our history that inspired artists and creators to symbolize them and design flags, representing different eras of our history and our nation’s values.

The Kurds, like all other nations, have hundreds of legends, tales and uprisings in our history. Each revolution had its own flag,  whose colours defined revolution, peace, environment and life.

Every Kurd and Kurdistani is proud of the Kurdistan flag, which was first raised in a dignified ceremony in the Mahabad Republic before Peshawa Qazi Mohammad, who was later arrested in the city. Tragically it quickly fell to the plots of Kurdistan’s invaders who destroyed the first ever Kurdistan Republic.

Throughout our history, the Kurdish people dreamt of raising the Kurdistan flag on our beloved homeland. This dream came true after the March 1991 Uprising. Half a century after the Mahabad Republic, the Kurdistan Parliament formally recognized and designated our beloved flag nationally, regionally and internationally, by passing the Law on the Flag of Kurdistan Region – Iraq, Law No. 14, at the Parliament sitting of 11 November 1999. And at the sitting of 19 June 2004, Parliament passed a Resolution that designates 17th December as the annual Kurdistan Flag Day and as well as Mother’s Day.

The beauty of this occasion is that it coincides with Mother’s Day, so for us Kurds it has a deeper meaning. Often people compare their attachment to their land and flag to their love for their mother; so this day is twice as special for the people of Kurdistan.

Best wishes to all the people of Kurdistan, long live the Kurdistani people, and may the blessed flag of Kurdistan always fly high and proud.
