Deputy Speaker Dr. Hemin Hawrami participates in workshop on international recognition of the Kurdish genocide

Kurdistan Parliament Deputy Speaker Dr. Hemin Hawrami on 26 January 2022 participated in a workshop on achieving greater international recognition of the genocide against the Kurds.

Parliament’s Committee on Martyrs Affairs, Genocide and Political Prisoners, Parliament’s research centre, and the genocide research centers of the University of Duhok and Charmo University took part in the workshop.

The KRG Education Minister Alan Hama Saeed, the Deputy Minister of Martyrs, staff of several ministries and academic institutions, experts on international crimes and genocide awareness organizations also took part.

Several participants said that to educate future generations, more focus should be put on teaching the subject in schools and universities. To increase international awareness and recognition, gathering more documentary evidence and establishing a museum were recommended, as well as learning from previous court cases and legal remedies.

The workshop discussions also stressed the need to increase international lobbying and advocacy through the KRG representative offices abroad and through European parliamentarians of Kurdish origin, in order to increase international awareness of the crimes of genocide committed against the Kurds.
