Committees’ recent meetings – 3 December 2019

Summary of Kurdistan Parliament committees’ recent meetings and activities:

Legislative Committee

2 December - The meeting led by the chair Mr Bizhar Kochar (KDP) focused on the Kurdistan Region Presidency’s return to Parliament of Law no. 3 of 2019. The committee discussed the Presidency’s reasons for returning the Law on the Ownership of Illegally Used Land in Municipalities, which was passed by Parliament on 30 October.

After giving their comments, suggestions the committee members decided to give a report to Parliament’s Presidency on making revisions to the law.

Integrity Committee with Municipalities, Transport, Communication, Travel and Tourism Committee

2 December - The two committees held a joint meeting with the participation of the Minister for the Region for Parliament Affairs, Dr. Vala Fareed, the Deputy Minister of Municipalities and Tourism, and the Director General of Water and Wastewater in Kurdistan Region.

The Deputy Minister for Municipalities and Tourism said that there should be more public awareness of water conservation. The Director General explained the Ministry’s installation of household and commercial water meters, which he said is very important for the fair distribution of water. 

The chairs of both committees highlighted the shortcomings of the water meter installation project by the government. 

The committees decided to submit a joint report to Parliament’s Presidency.

Peshmerga Affairs Committee

2 December - The committee led by the chair Mr. Reving Heruri (KDP) held their regular weekly meeting. The Committee read a report on the death of two Peshmerga soldiers of the 70 Brigade Forces. They discussed the Peshmerga reform and transparency project and decided to submit a report on their meeting to the Presidency of Parliament.

The MPs also discussed all the notes submitted by Parliament’s Presidency. 

Education, Higher Education and Scientific Research Committee visits Soran University

2 December – Members of the committee, led by the Rapporteur Dr. Galawezh Obeid, visited the Soran University and met the President, Dr. Muslih Mustafa. They discussed the challenges to the education process in Soran. The MPs visited the university’s research centre to hear about their problems and how find solutions.
