Speaker Dr. Rewas Faiq welcomes Lord David Alton

Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Dr. Rewas Faiq on 3 December welcomed Lord David Alton, a cross-bench life peer of the UK Parliament’s House of Lords, and a member of Defence and International Relations Committee.

The Speaker said, “The people of Kurdistan have a culture of living peacefully alongside other ethnicities and religions; those who are threatened in Iraq because of their religion or ethnicity seek refuge in Kurdistan.

Speaker Faiq spoke about the genocide committed against Kurds, and said that the resolution on the genocide of the Yazidis (Resolution Number 3 of 2019) was the most recent one passed by the Kurdistan Parliament on the genocide against the Kurdish people.

In parliament’s previous four-year term, Dr. Faiq said, MPs passed a law to protect minorities’ rights, which guarantees political participation, criminalises ethnic and religious hate speech, and guarantees mother-tongue education and broadcasting.

Lord Alton thanked Speaker Faiq for the meeting and wished her success in her duties.
