Deputy Speaker Hawrami and KRG Representative to USA Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman discuss women’s rights and Parliament’s relations with US

Kurdistan Parliament Deputy Speaker Hemin Hawrami on 27th June welcomed Ms Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Representative to the USA. They discussed Parliament’s important role in protecting women’s rights, and how to strengthen Parliament’s ties with the US.

Deputy Speaker Hawrami and Ms Abdul Rahman discussed how MPs, particularly the Committee on Social Affairs, Protection of Women’s Rights and Human Rights, can protect women’s rights through scrutiny of the government, coordinating with relevant organisations and ensuring legislation is implemented.

Ms Abdul Rahman said, “In the US, it is recognized that Kurdistan Region has made progress on women’s rights, but much more needs to be done and Parliament has a very important role in this.”

Deputy Speaker Hawrami and Ms Abdul Rahman also discussed how Kurdistan Parliament can develop ties with congress and the legislatures of US states.

Mr. Hawrami said that from the start of this fifth term, Parliament’s presidency has focused on committees’ important duties and on improving the work of Parliament’s administration, so that it is more efficient and productive. Once the new KRG cabinet is formed, he said, Parliament can officially begin its task of scrutinizing the government and ensuring that reforms are enacted.

Ms Abdul Rahman said that Kurdistan Region has emerged from the years of crises and can now begin to attract international companies to do business here. She said that the recent US Chamber of Commerce trade delegation to Kurdistan Region were pleased to meet with Deputy Speaker Hawrami earlier this week, to hear about Parliament's work.

Ms Abdul Rahman was accompanied by Ms Tara Hamawandi, the KRG US Representation's Director of Economic Development.
