Committees' recent meetings - 31 October 2019

MPs discussed the impact of the current unrest and demonstrations in Iraq on Kurdistani areas outside the KRG Administrative Area. MPs are also concerned about the Iraqi Council of Representatives’ decision on 28th October to form a committee to amend the Iraqi Constitution, a decision made in the wake of the protests. The MPs stressed that people in the Kurdistani areas must be protected, fearing that amendments to the Constitution could undermine rights.

Parliament passes Law on Ownership of Illegally Used Land in Kurdistan Region’s Municipalities

MPs on 30 October voted in a law gthat allows people who illegally used or built on land in Kurdistan Region's municipalities to buy the land from the government and register it in their names. 100 MPs voted in favour of the bill as a whole, out of 111 members. At the sitting two other bills had their first readings, and Speaker Rewas Faiq asked the relevant committees to work on them: a bill on patients’ rights and responsibilities; and a bill on commercial advertising.

Speaker Rewas Faiq receives Palestinian Consul General, Ambassador Nazmi Hazouri

The Kurdistan Parliament Speaker Dr Rewas Faiq on 29 October welcomed the Palestinian Consul General in Kurdistan Region, Ambassador Nazmi Hazouri. Speaker Faiq said that ties between the people of Palestine and Kurdistan go back decades. She expressed her concern over the reactions of some Palestinian civil activists regarding the events taking place in Western Kurdistan (Rojava).

Committees’ recent meetings – 29 October 2019

Committees this week discussed a Kurdish Diaspora bill, reducing bureaucracy to help farmers, and amendments to the law on the rights of people with disabilities. The Peshmerga Committee visited the new Peshmerga Hospital to find out their needs. The government of Germany funded the construction of the hospital. 

Order of business for 30 October: First readings of two bills; vote on bill on ownership of illegally used land in municipalities

The Presidency of the Kurdistan Parliament announces the order of business for the sitting of Wednesday 30th October at 11am - the sixth sitting of the autumn session of the first year of the Kurdistan Parliament’s fifth term.

Summary of committees’ recent meetings – 28 October 2019

Kurdistan Parliament's Martyrs Affairs Committee met the KRG Education to discuss problems with funding education for children of martyrs' families, and the need to include the Kurdish genocide in the school curriculum. The Relations Committee met the Director of Erbil International Airport to discuss how to prevent illegal travel through the airport. The Integrity Committee looked at complained and requests submitted to them by the public.

Deputy Speaker Hawrami chairs meeting to organize four new Parliament committees

Kurdistan Parliament Deputy Speaker Hemin Hawrami on 24 October chaired a meeting to discuss the creation of four new Parliament committees. MPs voted on 29 September to increase the number of committees from 15 to 19, so that MPs can be more focused in their committee work and aims. The membership of the committees continues to be based on the number of seats that each party own in the last general election.

Speaker Faiq conveys condolences on passing of Abdul Hamid Darwish, veteran politician from Rojava

The Speaker of the Kurdistan Parliament Dr. Rewas Faiq expressed her condolences on the passing of the veteran Kurdish politician, Abdul Hamid Darwish. Her condolence message is as follows.

MPs debate bill on ownership of illegally used land in municipalities, have first readings of six other bills

At a Parliament sitting on 23 October chaired by Speaker Dr. Rewas Faiq, MPs debated at length the articles of a bill (draft law) on ownership of lands that have been illegally used or taken in the municipalities of the Kurdistan Region. The purpose of the bill is to allow people who have illegally used and/or built on land in municipalities to buy it from the government and officially register it in their names, within a deadline. Six other bills had their first readings.
